Experiencing Islam at the BŪTENT! Festival

9/1/2026

This year at the BŪTENT! Festival, we wanted not only to tell people about Islam, but also to invite them to experience it.

The aromas of Arabian Peninsula coffee and karak chai filled our tent, while conversations were constantly taking place around it. Some people came out of curiosity, others wanted to learn more about Islam, and some simply wanted to have a chat. And every conversation was different.

We told visitors about how Muslim civilisation, over the centuries, contributed to the development of science, architecture, art, and culture. We showed that the history of Islam is also a story of people, their creativity, ideas, and legacy — a legacy whose traces can be found all over the world, including Lithuania.

Our calligrapher wrote visitors’ names in Arabic script, we recited the Qur’an live, and our henna artists created beautiful designs for women. Those who wished could even try wearing a hijab and get a closer look at this part of Muslim culture.

But perhaps the most beautiful part of the festival was not what we demonstrated, but the people we met. We had countless sincere conversations — sometimes deeply meaningful, sometimes simply fun — about Islam with wonderful people from across Lithuania. We talked about faith, culture, stereotypes, the lives of Muslims in Lithuania, and the things that connect us all despite our differences.

We are grateful to everyone who stopped by, tasted the coffee or tea, tried Arabic calligraphy or henna, put on a hijab, listened to the Qur’an being recited, or simply paused for a conversation.

Moments like these remind us that sometimes, in order to understand one another better, all we need to do is meet, talk, and remain curious.
